The Galaxy Tab and the iPad are both great products, and they both get their job done. They both have a bunch of technology packed into them, and both include very simplistic operating systems. The thing is though, only one of them is better than the other, and in this article, we will find out which one is.
Round 1: Core Components
The Galaxy Tab and the iPad both have amazing core components (being the CPU, RAM, and Chipset). The Samsung Galaxy Tab boasts 1GB of RAM which is enough to run Google’s new Android Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS, and also enough to hack it to run a OS meant for stronger systems such as Windows XP or even Vista. The Galaxy Tab includes a TI OMAP 4430 Chipset be Texas Instruments. The chipset features a Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU clocked at 1 GHz. The chipset is capable of displaying video of up to 1080p, and can support up to a 20MP camera, so the chipset, CPU, and RAM are definitely great for a tablet like the Galaxy Tab.
The iPad also has some amazing specs to counter the Galaxy Tab’s. The iPad has 1GB of RAM which is the same amount in Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. The iPad’s RAM is enough to run higher end Operating Systems too which is a plus for any mobile device. The iPad runs off the Apple A5X chipset, which is the upgrade to Apple’s A5 Chip. The chip is based upon ARM Cortex A9 MPCore CPU, so it we can safely assume it has similar specs to The Galaxy Tab’s Chipset. The iPad features a Dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU clocked at 1GHz which is identical to the Galaxy Tab’s CPU.
The iPad and the Galaxy Tab are almost identical to each other in terms of Core Components, so in this round there really isn’t a winner, so moving on.
Round 2: Display
There really isn’t any competition when it comes to display, the iPad is a definite winner here. Though the Galaxy Tab is capable of displaying up to 1080p resolution, the iPad’s display is so crisp, the human eye can’t even discern any pixels at a regular viewing distance. The iPad’s display looks great especially when it comes to playing beautiful games such as Epic Games’ Infinity Blade. The Galaxy Tab of course looks crisp and clear as well, but when the two devices are held side-by-side, the iPad is the one that stands out. In this round the clear winner to me was the iPad.
Round 3: Communications and Storage
These are the two things that really matter when it comes to phones and tablets, communications and storage. Luckily, the iPad and the Galaxy Tab both have all the storage and communications that we need, so there really wasn’t a big difference here. The Galaxy Tab features a 2G and a 3G antenna with support for bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi. The Tab can also be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot. As for storage, the tab has up to 32GB internal storage and MicroSD storage up to 64GB, so it can hold everything one can need in a tablet.
The iPad on the other hand really doesn’t have everything that the Galaxy Tab features. The iPad comes with built in 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a user can pay extra cash for an iPad that features 3G networking. The iPad does not include a card slot with it, but does have internal support for up to 64GB of storage.
Round 4: Operating Systems
When it comes to mobile Operating Systems, there are two things that one must think about, stability and freedom. The Apple iOS Operating System is very stable, and almost never crashes, but it is also very close and users have little to no freedom. The only way to get all that freedom on the iOS system is to void your warranty and jailbreak it.
With Android on the other hand, it is very free-to-use. It is easy to get files off the internet, use your phone or tablet as a flash drive, or use it as a console and play old SNES or Playstation games on it. A user can get even more freedom by rooting the phone. On the downside though, the Android OS is very unstable, and tends to crash or run slow most of the time. My HTC Evo 4G sometimes just restarts for no reason and I wonder why it’s doing these weird things.
So when it comes to Operating Systems, each one has its ups and downs, the iOS is stable, but closed, the Android is open, but unstable. So it depends on what one is looking for.
And the winner is..
The Samsung Galaxy Tab
The Galaxy Tab is definitely better more intuitive than the Apple iPad in the sense that it has communications as a standard, a card slot, and it runs on a great Operating System. The Galaxy Tab has suited me when I used it, but this doesn’t mean the iPad is absolutely horrible. The iPad is a great pick and if I didn’t have a Galaxy Tab, I would definitely be using my good ol’ iPad.
